Baptisms at St Mary Magdalene's

We offer two services:

The baptism service is for people who have an active faith and who want to be fully involved in the life of the church. In this service you make specific promises about your faith and about how you will live. The baptism service takes place in one of our main services.

For the baptism of a child, it is usual to have three godparents (for a boy: 2 men and 1 woman; for a girl: 2 women and 1 man), but not essential. It is important that at least one of the parents has been baptised and regularly comes to church, and that the godparents are committed to bringing up the child in the Christian faith.

We would expect people to have been regularly worshipping with us for at least three months before setting a date for the baptism. We would also want to spend at least three sessions with you, explaining the meaning and significance of baptism. This usually means that the vicar, or two people from the church, will come and see you!

The service of thanksgiving for the gift of a Child is for people who are not yet certain in their faith, but who still want to say thank you to God for their child and who wish to ask God’s help in bringing up their child. You do not have to make any promises or declaration of faith in this service. Baptism can then follow when people become more certain of their own faith. The service of dedication usually takes place in one of our main services, but can be at some other time.

It is possible to have “godparents” or “sponsors” or “special friends” for this service. There is no limitation on numbers.

There are no charges for either service if they are held in our main Sunday services.
