This is a testimony of God's calling, equipping and sustaining
It has been a privilege to be part of this adventure!1995
In 1995 a small group went to a conference organised by Youth For Christ and Scripture Union to discuss youth work in the London area. It was there that God spoke clearly to some of us, giving us a desire to ‘care’ for the youth this parish had contact with.
Meanwhile God was also talking to other people and via the co-ordination of the Paradise Project, a small group of us: Steve Harvey, Tracey Jones, Kevin O’Connor and Claudette Ramdeen began to talk and pray together.
Through a year of prayer and exploring various styles of youth work, the way forward became a little clearer!
1996
October 1996 The Youth Home Group started, six to eight teenagers met to look at what the Bible has to say today.
November 1996 The Friday Nite Youth Group started, young people were invited via the churches Sunday School and local primary schools – year 6 upwards.
The next 10 years and today
Through the following ten years the ‘team’ changed, Steve, Kevin and Claudette moved on to new ventures: Andrew Atherton, Stuart Reid, Freddie Nketia, Edd Simpson, Sharon Waldman and Charis Moxley have all in their own way brought something special to the group. Today the ‘team’ includes Roderick Jones, Tracey Jones, Jonathan Rust, Jo Saul and Vivian Edwards.
And the ‘youth, yes there have been many! They have raised money for causes important to them, Bully Help Line, Red Nose, Children-In-Need, WorldVision 24 Hour Famine, Comic Relief ~ there is never a dull moment!
Spring Harvest and an annual weekender have established themselves as firm favourites.
The Gospel According to Homer Simpson, Youth Alpha, issue or topic based discussions and ‘interviews’ have given us something to think about.
At the very heart of this decade ~ has been the very special relationship Jesus has with us as individuals, as a youth group and the friendships with each other.
We have seen at various times youth supported through happy and not so events – SATs and GCSEs, family break-up, unplanned pregnancy, muggings and assaults, bereavement, new siblings, moving home, all the things that life brings today!
